Alivia Tries Habit Stacking

Will any of my self help lead anywhere?!

Recently, I have discovered that time is fleeing more than usual.

I liken it to a small toddler. One minute the child is in front of you, the next it’s 200 feet to your left on a counter with scissors. And you’re left thinking…

Now how did that happen?!

But alas, you pick the child off the counter, grab the scissors, and carry on.

And while you are putting the scissors into a child-locked drawer, you start to think

How do I prevent this?

In reality, you can’t really control a toddler or time, but as an adult wannabe, I’m going to try my best, dadgumit. (Don’t ask why dadgumit was the word that came to mind… it just was)

So my best way to control the ever-elusive time… is Habit Stacking.

(If you want to read about another time I tried a self-help tactic, read this blog here!)

What is Habit Stacking?

Habit stacking is finding something you do consistently- Like brushing your teeth and adding a new routine to it usuing this formula :

(CURRENT HABIT), I will (NEW HABIT)

It leverages your brain's existing neural pathways, making new behaviors easier to adopt by using a familiar action as a cue for the next one, helping create consistent routines and build positive momentum.

I like to think of it as routine LEGO blocks. You keep adding them up and up until you can touch the clouds.

And within 90 days, this routine will become so natural you won’t have to think about it. (That’s how long it takes to build a habit)

WHAT DOES THIS LOOK LIKE FOR ALIVIA?

So far, I’ve only applied it to my morning routine. Because I desperately want to be a morning person. I want to be the girl who gets up at 5:30, has a protein drink, does a hot girl walk, and hits the weights.

That hasn’t happend… yet….

I also know you are supposed to add these lego blocks one at a time and slowly… But I can’t physically do that. It’s all or nothing for me lol.

But so far, this is what my morning routine looks like: The Black is what I used to do consistently, and the
pink is what I added.

ALIVIA’S MORNING

  1. Roll out of bed ( literally - I roll onto the ground)

  2. Walk back and forth from my bed to chester drawer 3-4 times

  3. Play my Whimsy Playlist

  4. Make Bed

  5. Get Ready for my work out class

    PAUSE FOR WORK OUT CLASSESS
( I TAKE A Gymnastics and HITT class from USU PE)

  6. Eat Breakfast

  7. Make a protein shake to sip on while getting ready

  8. While doing makeup and hair, start singing exercises

  9. Go to Class

So far, I have been feeling much calmer and more productive. I also give myself 5 minutes or less for each step, so no dilly-dallying. and I love a good dilly dally (see my read flags blog here)

But ultimately, just by doing this and creating things that I want to improve on, health, getting better at singing, I am creating time for myself and for things that matter to me.

And by doing it at the start of the day, I’m not getting mad at myself for not doing xyz while the clock ticks away.

I am on day 14 of habit stacking, and I invite you to stack habits with me. and write about the improvements you see in your life! I will update ya’ll in 4 weeks!

Until next blog,
