Keep Swimming!
Have you seen nemo?
There are two types of people in this world: Pet Smart fish and pond fish.
The difference between them is how they navigate change.
Pet Smart fish require a special baggie. Said baggie must sit in the new body of water until it reaches temperature, then you can safely release the fish into the new ecosystem, aquarium, or your brother’s water bottle for a not-so-harmless prank.
Pond fish, on the other hand, are well…how do I put this? YEETED.
They are yeeted so hard that they sometimes lie MOTIONLESS, just trying to catch their breath. But once they do, man, those fish take off and start exploring.
Now, before you start taking offense saying, “But Alivia, there isn’t one right way to adapt; what’s wrong with stability? and blah blah blah.”
You’re not wrong. Neither fish is bad; in fact, they are both needed in this world to make fish shopping a better place!
But the advice for both types of fish stays the same.
KEEP SWIMMING!
Swim when scared.
Swim when tired.
Swim when happy
Swim when in love.
Swim when anything happens in life.
Because if I've learned anything in DC–besides taking all the opportunities you can get– I’ve learned it’s a privilege not knowing what’s next, and swim where life takes you!
If you are freshly graduated, heartbroken, an empty nester, retired, or facing so many other changes life yeets your way and feel trepidation about what’s next, may I offer up some unsolicited advice and perspective.
You are so lucky to have options, to be able to choose the next step on your path. To reinvent yourself over and over and try everything.
With that…
Throw as many stones as you can until one skips.
Break your heart until you find someone with needle and thread.
Say yes, be kind, and give until you feel brittle in the bones, and give some more.
The day we’re born, we start to die.
So you better keep swimming.
Until next blog,
(Also sorry if this is preachy; I get real emotional at midnight- but I haven’t posted in so long that I thought I had to write something!)
I’m crossing one last thing off my 2026 Summer Heart List: sharing a chapter of my fiction. Meet Ruth Ryan, a reporter covering powered vigilantes, a destroyed Capitol, and one very questionable Creature in Chicago.
A mysterious new word, an unnamed boy who would not text back and one Nashville writing session later, “Situationship” was born. Here’s the story behind the flirty, summery song—and the emotional confusion that inspired it.
Day 1 of 4 postcards counting down until you meet me in Situationship. Five days to go—hope you packed light and left your expectations at home.
Weird things happen to me.
like "accidentally earning the nickname 'The Furry Girl'"
Somehow, this isn't even in my top ten strangest life experiences.
I have absolutely no qualifications to be giving dating advice, yet here we are. After years of deeply embarrassing field research, I've concluded that flirting only goes three ways: Flirt. Flap. Or fail. One leaves you kicking your feet, one leaves you tripping over them, and one leaves you considering witness protection after sending a risky text. Welcome to my TED Talk.
I didn’t choose this battle. This battle chose me. Because somewhere along the way, we as a society decided “Pooh Bear” was romantic… and I simply cannot stay silent.
Summer is my New Year’s, which means it’s time for my annual Heart List: 10 challenges designed to either change my life or emotionally humble me.
This year’s theme is apparently “taking gambles,” which feels concerning for everyone involved.
What if your inside thoughts… didn’t stay inside?
This week, I tested what happens when you actually act on your kind impulses—whether that’s complimenting a stranger, risking a little embarrassment, or just choosing to be a little more honest than usual. Turns out, the worst-case scenario isn’t that bad… and the best-case scenario makes for a really good story.
I’ve hit writer’s block, which I’m starting to realize is directly tied to the fact that my life currently contains zero mediocre men. And unfortunately, mediocre men are historically my greatest songwriting inspiration.
Putting yourself out there is scary. Whether it’s jewelry on a boutique table or songs on the internet, eventually every dream asks the same question: do you have the grit to keep going when no one stops?
Some girls go through a phase. I went through an eight-year identity spiral and came back with boundaries.
A first date is not a blood oath. It’s a conversation over pasta with the freedom to go home by 9:12.
A step-by-step guide to working on your whimsy: talk to strangers, say yes more often, curate a soundtrack, and treat your ordinary days like they matter.
Girl gangs live rent-free in my mind… mostly because they walk among us. And no, I’m not bitter.
Nothing catastrophic happened at Chipotle. I ordered food, a man said “definitely not,” and I thought about it longer than I’d like to admit.
After reading Percy Jackson on holiday break, I came to the haunting conclusion that male main characters in YA Books are now nonexistent. I have to rant about it and pray it brings on change.
I have a confession…. hate to say it… EMBARRASSED TO SAY IT. Here it is for you to read it
There are two types of people in this world: PetSmart fish and pond fish. Whether life gently eases you into change or completely yeets you into it, the advice remains the same: keep swimming.
